DR. JONATHAN WALLACE: I remember when I was training at Northwestern and I was a resident there and was involved when Northwestern first started to do bariatric operations. I had an opportunity to go to one of the patient seminars and hear some of the testimonials that were patients were giving, some of the stories that they would tell about what weight loss meant to them, and I found it to be extremely moving.

And I found that there really no other operations that I think of that could have such a profound impact on a patient’s life from top to bottom. I remember one patient telling me a story about how she can recall when she had lost enough weight for her children’s hands to actually touch around her back when they gave her a hug. And I found that to be particularly moving and I still remember that story today.
