What Weight Loss Procedures Are Available?
- Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy – Vertical sleeve gastrectomy can remove 70-80% of the stomach. This can greatly reduce the volume of the stomach, restricting the amount of food an individual can eat at one time.
- Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass – Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery is designed to reduce the size of the stomach by creating a small pouch and connecting it directly to the middle portion of the small intestine. This not only limits the amount of food that can be consumed but also decreases the absorption of nutrients and calories.
- Duodenal Switch – Combining a sleeve gastrectomy with a duodenal switch, Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch (BDS/DS) involves reducing the size of the stomach before re-routing the small intestine. This procedure controls food intake and impacts the body’s ability to absorb nutrients, often leading to weight loss and improvements in conditions such as diabetes.
- LAP-BAND® System – LAP-BAND® System surgery involves the placement of an adjustable silicone band around the upper part of the stomach. This adjustable band creates a small pouch above it with a narrow opening to the rest of the stomach, restricting food intake and promoting a feeling of fullness sooner while eating.
- Revisional Bariatric – Revisional bariatric surgery is typically performed to modify or correct a previous weight loss surgery that has not resulted in adequate weight loss, has caused significant complications, or has led to weight regain. This may involve altering the original procedure’s structure to enhance its effectiveness or address specific health issues.
- Robotic Surgery – In the context of weight loss procedures, robotic surgery utilizes advanced robotic systems, such as the da Vinci® Surgical System, to perform bariatric surgeries with enhanced precision, flexibility, and control. This technology allows our doctors to conduct complex surgeries through small incisions, leading to greater accuracy and potentially shorter recovery times.
- ORBERA™ Non-Surgical Balloon System – The FDA-approved ORBERA™ Non-Surgical Balloon System involves a gastric balloon that is temporarily placed in the stomach for six months. No incisions are necessary—the balloon is introduced into the stomach via the throat and is then filled with saline to occupy space in the stomach, which helps reduce food intake by creating an earlier sense of fullness. The ORBERA™ system includes a medically supervised weight management program.
Is Bariatric Surgery Right for You?
Bariatric surgery may be right for you if you are overweight and have not achieved lasting weight loss with diet and exercise alone. Typically, it is considered for individuals with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher, or those with a BMI of 35 or higher who also have obesity-related health conditions. You should have realistic expectations for the results of the procedure and a commitment to lifestyle changes following surgery. Consulting with one of our doctors can help determine whether bariatric surgery is right for you.
